Velvet is a long running trend throughout interiors and will continue to be a strong trend in 2020. When choosing a rich, elegant fabric, it is hard to go past velvet. Velvet has an amazing luxurious feel and is surprisingly durable when properly cared for.
Velvet cloth is comprised of two parts; a woven backing and a pile. Velvet being a pile fabric will always bruise or flatten. Different types of fibres both natural and synthetic are used to create a velvet, and each have different characteristics that you should be aware of.
Natural or Cellulose Velvets are far more rich and luxurious than Synthetic Velvets. However, because of their softness and lustre, they can crush and mark as a result of normal handling and wear. This should be expected and accepted as part the fabric’s construction, comfort and elegance. Synthetic Velvets recreate the look and feel of ’real’ velvet. They are flame retardant, resistant to mildew and have dimensional stability.
The direction of the nap on a piece of furniture or drapery is very important to the look. You can discuss this with us as you will need to know what “look” you would prefer to achieve, as the pile up or down can dramatically affect the look and colour of the velvet.
Velvet is a rich elegant fabric that has an amazing ability to completely transform a space. The variation of colour creates drama, luxury and depth to even the most drab rooms or tired old pieces of furniture.
